Jetpack installs like any other WordPress plugin, and some hosting providers auto-install it alongside WordPress. After installation, users are prompted to connect the plugin to WordPress.com; those without an existing WordPress.com account are asked to create one during the connection process. The free Jetpack app is available for iOS/iPhone and Android, and puts site management on mobile devices. It allows users to publish posts, check stats, moderate comments and respond to security threats. Jetpack was launched by Automattic as a way to provide feature parity between WordPress.com and self-hosted WordPress.org sites, giving self-hosted users the cloud features of the hosted service while retaining control of their own site. Early Jetpack releases added features that remain part of the toolkit. Version 1.2 introduced email subscriptions, with WordPress.com servers handling the sending and management of subscription emails; visitors can subscribe to new posts or to new comments on a post, and a Blog Subscriptions widget can be added to a sidebar. Version 1.3 added Contact Forms, created from an icon above the post editor, with customisable fields, a configurable recipient address and responses listed under Feedbacks in the WordPress admin. Jetpack Comments followed as an opt-in feature letting visitors comment using an existing WordPress.com, Twitter or Facebook account, or as a guest.

Jetpack modules expose filters that developers can use from a theme's functions.php file or a functionality plugin. Site Accelerator, formerly Photon, automatically caches and serves images uploaded to a site, and specific images or entire pages can be excluded using the jetpack_photon_skip_image filter; the jetpack_photon_url function can generate custom cropped or resized image URLs. Jetpack automatically generates Open Graph meta tags for shared posts, and the jetpack_open_graph_tags and jetpack_open_graph_image_default filters allow a custom home page image. Thumbnail sizes in the Top Posts widget can be changed via the jetpack_top_posts_widget_image_options filter combined with custom CSS.
