Frequently asked questions
How do I get a DOI?
DOIs are obtained through a DOI Registration Agency (RA), which collects metadata, assigns DOI names and offers services such as reference linking or metadata lookup. You do not need to be a member of the DOI Foundation to work with an RA.
Source: FaqsHow much does it cost to get a DOI?
The cost of registering new DOI names depends on the services purchased, as each Registration Agency is free to offer its own business model, so you should contact an RA to discuss options. Existing DOI names are, and always will be, free to resolve.

Members of the DOI Foundation are organisations rather than individuals, and membership is open to any organisation supporting the development of the DOI system. Interested organisations can get in touch at info@doi.org.
Source: FaqsWho governs the DOI Foundation?
The DOI Foundation is governed by its Registration Agencies, each of which nominates a DOI Foundation Board Director. It is the registration authority for the ISO standard ISO 26324 and is legally bound to maintain the DOI system and comply with its rules.

The Foundation is self-funded: the costs of running the DOI system are recouped from annual fees paid by the Registration Agencies and other Members, alongside a long-term sustainability fund. Operating costs were $884k in 2021.
Source: About UsWhen was the DOI Foundation founded?
The Foundation was launched in 1998 to develop the DOI system, with the first applications launched in 2000. The DOI system became an international standard, ISO 26324, on 1 May 2012.
Source: Key Facts on Digital Object Identifier SystemHow do I resolve a DOI name?
Prefacing a DOI with doi.org/ turns it into an actionable link, for example https://doi.org/10.1000/182, which the proxy server redirects to the object's current location. The proxy service supports HTTPS (preferred) and HTTP, is accessible over IPv6 and supports DNSSEC.
